Sol Soils Potting Mixes

Orchid Chunky Mix is designed to be extra light and avoid compaction to provide maximum oxygen to the root system, a must for these unique plants.

Perlite enhances drainage and aeration, promoting root growth, and preventing root rot. These materials assist in preventing the soil from compacting and making sure that the roots get enough air longer term.

Coconut Husks helps to promote the growth of lignins, which increases the amount of beneficial bacteria around your plant's root system.

Forest Products are used in gardens as a mulch, a natural, organic material that breaks down slowly over time, gradually releasing nutrients into the soil. As it decomposes, it enriches the soil with organic matter, improving soil structure, water retention, and overall fertility.

As orchids typically are not found in the ground, they obtain water and nutrients from the air, rain, and debris that collects in the crevices in which they grow.

Please don’t follow the ice cubes watering strategy. Water them deeply every week or so depending on your situation, and it’ll keep the mix generally humid for the roots to be happy long term.

NOTE: Some Jewel Orchids or really young orchids would be better suited for the Houseplant Chunky Mix as the root systems are just so much more fine than a traditional orchid species.

Our Potting Mixes are engineered to be more forgiving of a wide range of plant care styles--whether you're a beginner or have cultivated houseplant collection. Our lineup of potting substrates allow a more consistent flow of oxygen to the root system, leading to less stress and more growth over time. Regardless of the type of plant you have, we have a mix designed for their natural preferences.

Normal potting mix requires repotting every 12-18 months. Our Sol Soils Potting Mixes don’t break down or get hydrophobic in the same manner, and allow for 24-36 months before needing a refresh. However, if you notice growth not starting again for a growing season, it may indicate the roots have grown a lot and it wants a larger pot because it’s root-bound! A sign of healthy growth!

We still hand mix, fill, and seal every bag in small batches. While we feel this is the best method to make sure the quality stays as high as possible, it does mean there's variation in every bag. Some bags are chunkier and some are finer within every batch. Rest assured, they'll perform as expected even with this variation!
